Idleness on the British Waterways

Since arriving in England, I have made a genuine attempt to see some of this country as well as seeing Europe. And I'd have to recommend seeing part of it on a 70ft narrow boat.

Not a red bus in sight

On Friday night Laura and I joined the rest of our amiable group in Warwick for an adventure on the high seas...or the low seas at least which suits my not-so-iron stomach a lot better. After an evening at the Cape of Good Hope pub of drinks and entertainment (care of Laura and the local band) we crawled into our little bunks for a good night's rest.

On Saturday morning we set off down the Grand Union canal. The day consisted of lounging about in the sun reading, chatting, opening and closing locks with pretty scenery cruising by at walking pace, and setting foot on land when there was a pub in sight. Dinner (as was b'fast) was served on board thanks to Mike our captain, before heading to another local pub for some cider & more scrabble.

Some of the passing scenery

I started Sunday with a hot shower (vs Sat's cold shower - sleeping in isn't always a good idea), some breakfast and more of the strenous activities on offer. Moving from the cabin to the roof that is. We continued our route along the Warickshire Ring, this time along the Oxford canal to Rugby and eventually arrived in the late afternoon.

Taking in the last of the sun on the roof

Despite the accomm which doesn't warrant a star rating, we had a most enjoyable and peaceful time on board the 'Sycamore'. If you don't mind having nothing else to do but listen to Van Morrison, watch the countryside go by, read a good book and drink red wine then this could be the thing for you.
