Laura and I headed off on our Easter adventure on Thursday night. We bussed into Bristol and headed out for a few pre-easter drinks with Alana & Jules and Harry. We went to The Three Sugar Loaves next to the Christmas steps, the cube, and Mr Wolf's.
Friday morning we packed the car and hit the road. Those of us in the back slept off the shots from the night before and arose in Newquay for a lunch break at a cute cafe, Cafe Irie. Not really England's Gold Coast as we had been expecting...it was something more sinister, like England's Robina!
We headed further south down the highway with the traffic to Marazion where we spent the next 3 nights. Marazion is an ancient market town, and a great spot for a getaway, and definitely the best seaside village I saw. We headed out immediately to check out the local pubs and enjoyed pints of cider over an evening game of scrabble (Jules won). We cooked up some burritos before hitting the sack back at the cottage.
The cottage was absolutely delightful with a gorgeous sprawling garden down to the ocean's edge. And it has tremendous views over the rugged coastline and to St Michael's Mount (old castle and church on a tiny island - the English version of NW France's Mont St Michel). If you are headed this way at all, you really should stay here!
The next day took us back to Newquay again briefly to collect 2 more of our party, Jason & Fran. And off we headed to St Ives for some lunch. The tide was out in the harbour but it was still a relatively cute town if you look beyond the sixties and seventies buildings the English deem appropriate for seaside accommodation. It was very much built for tourists like Montville on the Sunshine Coast, and a bit of an artists' hub as well. A sneak through the St Ives' Tate was a great detour.
On Sat night the last 2 of our party arrived - James and Glyn - just in time for a bbq and our easter celebrations. The Easter Bunny didn't wake us until late on Sunday morning after which the girls piled in the car for an excursion to Mousehole (lovely quaint fishing village - very Heartbeat) and Land's End (where the first and last of everything resides). On late Sunday afternoon we all caught the ferry over to St Michael's Mount to wander through the still-inhabited castle and its estate.
A quiet night was had by all on Sunday, and on Monday we parted. Laura, A&J and I piled back in the car to finish off the travel lollies and headed back to Bristol. Several hours later and 'the Game of Life' won and lost we arrived with just a final onward journey for Laura & I on the bus to London.
All in all, a really great weekend away. Superb weather and beautiful countryside and seaside views the entire time. Can't wait for my next weekend away!
