After surprising a herd of cattle and a few horses in the middle of their paddock, Kayo and I eventually found the National Trust-listed Borthwood Copse. And more importantly managed to find our way back out again. Jacob, if you’re reading this, despite the fact that this grove of woodland trees is no bigger than the park across from my house in Toowoomba, I think I can now easily negotiate the Townsville jungle!
Our rambling also extended to wandering up to and around Appuldurcombe House. Now a ruin, it was clearly once a beautiful 18th C home and grounds. Very Pride & Prejudice. I felt quite underdressed for the occasion.
The remainder of our island discoveries took place from the car. We took 3 days to see it all – it could have easily been done in two. Highlights included Osborne House in East Cowes - Queen Victoria & Albert’s less than modest holiday house; horse riding on the beach and through the bridleways of Bembridge - a first for me; salmon and sav blanc at Fulton’s restaurant; and the first shopping strip of sailing-attire-only I have ever seen in Cowes. Just as well the nautical look is in right now. David, I know where you can pick up your next pair of deck shoes.
If you find thatched rooves architecturally appealing and you can’t walk past a clotted cream tea sign without stopping then this is the place for you!
