Fresh air on the North Norfolk Coast

At this time of year the girls and I usually try to squeeze in a little UK weekend getaway. This weekend we visited Norfolk. Only 2 1/2 hours drive from London, we arrived at Titchwell Manor in plenty of time on Friday night to unwind with a couple of glasses of wine in the bar after we settled in.

We woke to a beautiful sunny day on Saturday and had breakfast (full english for me!) in the conservatory overlooking the garden. With full tummies we wandered around the nearby village of Burnham Market for an hour so and then on to Wells Next The Sea.

From the centre of Wells NTS we walked out towards the water along a path which eventually met the vast sandy beach. It was low tide and the water was miles out. The beachfront was lined with brightly painted beach huts and pine trees set behind them. It was a very pretty scene dotted with dogs catching balls, children making sandcastles (and parents thanking mother nature they could be outside again), shells and stones marking the tide line and people like us strolling along the sand soaking up the sunshine.

After quite a long walk we had a late lunch pit stop on a ship tied up at the port, and went for a bit of a drive on the way back to the B&B in time for a cream tea. We relaxed over our scones, had a snooze and got ready for dinner at the Hoste Arms. Johnny Depp is rumoured to be a regular there but we didn't see him. Instead we ate well, chatted away and had a last glass of wine in the hotel before bed.

Sunday started with salmon & scrambled eggs for me. We had a leisurely breakfast together before checking out at 11am and took off in search of seal pups at a nearby beach. It's not the right season for seals but apparently a few were recently spotted there. Alas, we saw no seals, but enjoyed another long walk along the beach. That pretty much tuckered me out, so I dozed in the car on the way to lunch at The Rose & Crown in a village on our way back to London. We had a proper pub fare there (I had fish and chips) and continued the drive home.

A resounding thumbs up from all of us for Norfolk - lovely villages and beaches and such an easy drive from London. I have a sneaking suspicion we'll be back!
