My first weekend trip to Europe since arriving here was to Berlin this weekend with Laura & Cath. And a great start to my continental travels it was!
We did a walking tour for 4 hours on Sat morning and took in most of the sights and history – Brandeburg Gate, Check Point Charlie, Hitler’s Bunker, the Holocaust Memorial and what’s left of the Berlin Wall of course. Amazing to think just 20 years ago it was a completely different city – one of the most interesting parts of the story to me. Berlin is full of art and culture and many of the buildings house museums and galleries which we only saw from the outside.
With a different focus on the 80s, the three of us dressed up in some terrific eighties outfits with the all-important hair, make up and accessories to match and hit the town. Had a delicious German dinner at a local pub where we stood out like sore thumbs (mission accomplished) and then headed to King Kong Klub (great music), White Trash (not so great music) and then finally to KaffĂ© Burger, one of the best clubs I’ve ever been to music wise – very funky. Made it home by 5am.
On Sunday morning we recovered over brunch at a great place that our walking tour guide clued us up on, and then went to Reichstag – parliament house – for a view of the city from a glass dome designed by the same person who designed the glass triangle at the Louvre. Then it was back to the airport for our flight home.
It was also my first stay in a hostel and I am proud to say I survived the experience!
