Oktoberfest

We booked this trip long ago and I still am not sure why I signed up for a beer festival when I don’t even drink the stuff but a weekend away with a group of friends is always fun and this was no exception. This time around I travelled with Laura, Stuart, Ange, Warwick and Bou.

Saturday saw a 9am start in the Paulaner tent – one of the biggest at the festival. After many litre steins of beer (I moved on to shandies aka Radlers to ensure I lasted the distance) and half a roast chicken for lunch we eventually tuckered ourselves out with the singing, prosting, inevitable queuing for the bathroom and headed outside around 4pm for some fresh air, a wander around the fair grounds (think Royal Show / Ekka but with people instead of barn yard animals behind the fences) and a go on the rides. We had a kip and then began the evening festivities at the restaurant come bar come night club downstairs. After dinner, came the tequila (my shot of choice especially after a day of beer) and G&Ts, and lots of dancing. It was a very fun night.

Unfortunately on Sunday while I did make it out to the festival again, I was in no state to drink any beer and I had another kip at the hotel that afternoon and a quiet evening while the rest of the gang continued the work out of lifting stein to mouth.

Monday was an adventure in itself. We quickly wandered through the old town of Munich before we boarded the train to see a famous castle but by the time we got there we had time to look at it from the foot of the hill (mighty impressive from there) before we had to turn around and head back to London.

So a fun one, but I wouldn’t recommend Oktoberfest as an experience unless you are a) a very keen beer drinker, b) don’t mind being locked in a building with no ventilation, c) like to dress up as a Bavarian wench (v. cute) and d) are very keen beer drinker (yes, I meant to write that twice). Now if there is a tequila festival, I’d be keen for that!
